Name derived from the beggars who had their monastery here on the left side of the street before 1317 and gave it to the nuns of Blijdenberg around 1589. The latter built their church in 1627. Order expelled in 1798 and convent buildings partially demolished. On these grounds the Saint Libertus Institute was founded in 1868, governed by the friars of Our Lady of Mercy, now converted into Mechelen Technical Schools.
